Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How long will it take you to complete the project?
A: This is the first time I have attempted a book of this size and scope, so I can’t give a definite answer. You can follow my progress on the Timeline to get a sense of my pace. My progress will of course fluctuate as life offers challenges and gifts of uninterrupted time.
Q: What will it cost to see this project through to completion?
A: Again, this is the first time I have attempted a book of this size and scope, but I estimate that the total cost, including living and working expenses, research, travel, materials, and equipment will be around $500,000 to $750,000 over the next 5 to 10 years.
Q: How can I help?
A: Please consider making a donation in any amount. A tube of paint costs $5-$20, so even a $5 donation helps. You can also donate books and supplies direct from sellers. If you are a photographer or researcher, please consider granting permission for me to use your images as reference material. I always try to paint from life, but in a work that aims to cover such a wide scope historically and geographically, I will be relying on access to good photographic material.
Q: How will the book be made available to those of us who want to see it in person?
A: I’m hoping that individuals and institutions who make the investment in the fine art edition, a full-size hand-embellished reproduction available for purchase over time, will create opportunities to display the pages in their local communities and beyond. If you know of a collector in your area who may have an interest, please pass this information along.
Q: Are you available to speak at our conference/event/workshop?
A: Depending on the location and timing, I would be happy to consider giving a presentation about the Illuminated Origin project, especially if there is an opportunity for me to conduct research for the book on the same trip. Please contact me if you would like to arrange an exhibit, conference presentation, demonstration, or workshop for adults or children.
